God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.

John 3.16

What does this famous verse say about God’s care for the entire universe, and the Bible’s vision of a new heaven and a new earth?

Professor J. Richard Middleton's first talk will present a comprehensive biblical vision of God’s love and care for the entire universe, and his overarching purpose to fill creation with the fullness of his presence, culminating in 'a new heaven and a new earth'.

What are we to do in times of crisis and suffering, when God's purposes do not seem to be fulfilled? The lament psalms provide us with faithful models for bold and honest prayer to the God of all creation.

J. Richard Middleton is Professor of Biblical Studies at Northeastern Seminary in Rochester, New York, and serves as adjunct professor of Old Testament at the Caribbean Graduate School of Theology in Kingston, Jamaica. He is a Theology Fellow for BioLogos, a US organisation helping Christians integrate theology and science.

Born and raised in Jamaica, Richard did his BTh at the Jamaica Theological Seminary, holds an MA in philosophy from the University of Guelph (Canada) and a PhD in theology from the Free University of Amsterdam. He has authored a number of books and articles on topics from creation theology to biblical eschatology, via themes of suffering and power.
