What to study?

Now is a time when many students are choosing subjects to study. Those applying for undergraduate degrees in the UK will be browsing university prospectuses, booking open days and filling out UCAS forms. Those already at university may be finalising module choices for the coming academic year. And some doctoral Read more

When ethical systems collide

News reports in the UK these last few days have commented on the resignation of Lord Geidt, the Prime Minister’s ethics adviser. Alongside the speculation by columnists, bewilderment about the reason for Lord Geidt’s sudden departure has been expressed by none other than the Prime Minister himself. The puzzle seems Read more

Feeding the Earth

This Friday sees the launch of a series of lunchtime webinars about a topic that affects all of us: sustainable food systems. From farm to fork, what does it mean for our food to be sustainably produced, processed, distributed and consumed? As consumers, what kinds of products and ingredients are Read more

Christian sustainability?

Sustainability is the watchword of our time. I wonder if it is the most widely shared ethic in today’s world; certainly it is seems to pop up frequently in the aspirations of people and organisations in the English-speaking world. From farming to investing and from industry to government, sustainable living Read more

The many-sided wisdom of God

The KLC Junior Scholars’ Reading Group looking at Herman Dooyeweerd’s book In the Twilight of Western Thought has begun, and our first session proved fascinating and thought-provoking for me. Besides Mike’s monthly posts going through each chapter ahead of our discussing it, we’ll also have some reflections from participants. I Read more

The life of Covid

I’m recovering from a Covid infection as I write. It’s been a mild one, like a dry flu, and for this I feel grateful for the vaccinations I received back in the summer. Even before contracting Covid-19, I was planning to write about the biological aspect of this epidemic – Read more

The Virus and the Soul

The word “Covid” surely evokes a mental reaction now from people everywhere in the world. The illness caused by this particular virus has inflicted suffering and death in almost every country, and continues to do so, albeit with very different trajectories in different places. This virus is also perceived in very Read more

A Reformational theory of objectivity?

Can Christian thinking enhance academic work?  It’s our conviction, at Faith-in-Scholarship, that it can.  I believe that worshipping and following Jesus Christ as lord of creation and saviour of the world should enrich all kinds of activities – including academic work, from maths to literature.  But a lot of the time this conviction Read more

Challenging Christian stereotypes

Mike offered some advice for navigating scholarly disagreement a few weeks ago, and today I want to ask some questions about what may be the most prominent rift among Christians in our day, evident in scholarly writing as well as campaigning and, dare I say, in a large chunk of the discussions I see among Read more

Making sense of Covid

We’re starting a new series looking at the phenomenon of Covid-19, this strange disease that has spread to virtually every part of the world’s population over the last 18 months or so and is attributed with the deaths of more than 3 million people so far.  This basically biotic event Read more
